artist statement.
In my work I am always striving to be emotionally invested and immersed. One way or another I have always placed a heavy significance on the process over the outcome. The importance of process comes from a desire to decipher, expel and ultimately govern my own human anxieties, frustrations and innermost feelings. My objective is always to find a sense of catharsis through my artistic expression and to aptly capture this for others to hopefully resonate with.
I employ a mixed media approach in my work. I frequently begin working using photography as a foundation from which I will build concepts, imagery and drawings. I will then move on to create work that is more three dimensional; emphasising the use of space and considering how the work can and will interact with me and my body.
I enjoy the slow and tactile nature of embroidery and weave as textile disciplines as they allow me to consider and execute my work in an extremely involved capacity that affords me the time, space and connection to the work that I need. I will often use found materials as well as beading to create eclectic and texturally diverse pieces.
I also often experiment with photography and moving image as a means of capture; often exploring different methods in which I can physically interact with and manipulate textile work I have made. I want to visually capture my work while corporeally experiencing it in the very moment it is made. Digital capture allows an allocated space and time to address these feelings and begin to probe into their roots and causes. I aim to use and reuse work, layer and weave it until I am satisfied that I am completely absorbed within the work and the work reflects and conveys a true and honest feeling.
